Characterizing NF and RO membrane surface heterogeneity using chemical force microscopy
نویسندگان
چکیده
Chemical force microscopy (CFM) was used to characterize the chemical heterogeneity of two commercially available nanofiltration and reverse osmosis membranes. CFM probes were modified with three different terminal functionalities: methyl (CH3), carboxyl (COOH), and hydroxyl (OH). Chemically distinct information about the membrane surfaces was deduced based on differences in adhesion between the CFM probes and the membrane surfaces using both traditional atomic force microscopy (AFM) force measurements and spatially resolved friction images. Recent Progresses in Preparation and Characterization of RO Membranes
Reverse osmosis (RO) is a water purifcation technology that uses a semipermeable membrane to remove ions, molecules, and larger particles for the production of drinking water. The frst RO membrane for seawater desalination, wastewater treatment and other applications were made of cellulose acetate. But, the polyamide thin-flm composite membrane that can tolerate wide pH...

متن کاملStudy of the Effect of Nanoparticles and Surface Morphology on Reverse Osmosis and Nanofiltration Membrane Productivity
To evaluate the significance of reverse osmosis (RO) and nanofiltration (NF) surface morphology on membrane performance, productivity experiments were conducted using flat-sheet membranes and three different nanoparticles, which included SiO2, TiO2 and CeO2. In this study, the productivity rate was markedly influenced by membrane surface morphology. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) analysis of mem...
متن کاملCharacterization and effect of biofouling on polyamide reverse osmosis and nanofiltration membrane surfaces.
Biofouling is a major reason for flux decline in the performance of membrane-based water and wastewater treatment plants. Initial biochemical characterization of biofilm formation potential and biofouling on two commercially available membrane surfaces from FilmTec Corporation were investigated without filtration in laboratory rotating disc reactor systems. These surfaces were polyamide aromati...
متن کاملSeawater Desalination by using Nanofiltration (NF) and Brackish Water Reverse Osmosis (BWRO) Membranes in Sequential Mode of Operation
In this study, the applicability of nanofiltration (NF) membranes as a pretreatment prior to reverse osmosis (RO) in seawater desalination was investigated. The membranes used wereNF270 and NF90 as the NF membranes, while the brackish water (BW) RO membrane BW30 was used as the RO membrane. In desalination tests, permeates of the NF membraneswere collected and used as the feed to th...
